One of a Kind

HomeShowExpo 2025 offers a unique look at new construction.

This September marks the fiftieth year the Home Builders Association of Greater Des Moines (HBADSM) has hosted a HomeShowExpo in the metro area. A lot may have changed during that half century. But one thing has remained the same: The HomeShowExpo highlights the talents of some incredible professionals, and Des Moines does that in its own unique way.

This year’s chairman, Logan Galloway of Vibrant Insurance Group, says the HomeShowExpo is one of the reasons he first got actively involved in the HBADSM. “Vibrant has been a part of the Uncoastal Social since we attended the first one in 2022. We were blown away by that event, which actually won a national award for the HBA. The Vibrant team got really excited about the HomeShowExpo and the unique features of the entire event.”

Although other home builders associations around the country have hosted shows as long as Des Moines has, every other association has gravitated away from a single-site show. Des Moines is the only remaining organization that has never deviated from that format, even during COVID in 2020.

Sage Homes’ Chris Pickard, this year’s HBADSM President, says he has always considered the event as something of a rite of passage for a builder. “Growing up, I’d attended the HomeShowExpo nearly every year. When I got into home building, I knew that was something I would want to do. After six years as a builder, we decided Sage Homes was ready, and we entered the 2020 show. What a rite of passage it turned out to be.”

Despite the chaos and uncertainty of building such a project during a worldwide pandemic, Pickard says he doesn’t regret the decision. “We’ve participated several times since then.”

Sage Homes has won a number of awards, including People’s Choice and Best Layout & Livability multiple times. This year, however, Pickard is focusing on his role as HBADSM President rather than custom builder. “My role is more of a support role this year, especially since we have so many builders new to the HomeShowExpo,” he says. “There are seven entries this year, and only one company is a repeat builder, and they were new last year.”

Pickard and Galloway both say that adds to the excitement of this year’s anniversary event.

“The craftsmanship that goes into these homes is always amazing,” Pickard says. “But with so many of these companies having a history in remodeling, they’re bringing fresh eyes to these projects. Seeing their skill, where they put their creative and financial emphasis, which features and products they put their money into—that’s a different take on new construction.”

As Chair of the HomeShowExpo, Galloway says he has been honored to serve the event, although he sees his participation as a supporting role also. “The HBA leadership and staff do the biggest lift. My goal is to help things run smoothly, to volunteer and serve as spokesperson wherever I’m needed, and just to be a good steward of the task I’ve been given.”

Galloway says Vibrant Insurance Group has participated in the HomeShowExpo in the past, sponsoring builder clients when they have entries in the event. This year, Vibrant has taken on a larger role along with Galloway.

“Not only has the company been so supportive of my participation,” he says, “but Vibrant is always willing to add value to any organization that supports our clients, including the Home Builders Association of Greater Des Moines.”

For the 2025 Expo, Vibrant is serving as presenting sponsor for the Uncoastal Social. Any excess funds from that event will go to support Iowa Homes for Heroes (see “There’s So Much More!”).

“This year, the Uncoastal Social event honors the 50th anniversary theme with a champagne night of elegance and entertainment,” Galloway says. “That evening is always a highlight of the Expo. But the home show isn’t just for consumers. Most of us don’t get to walk through million-dollar houses every day or see the amazing craftsmanship that goes into these homes, from the builders themselves to all the tradesmen and crews who have worked on them. It’s pretty special to see the finished product.”

Pickard says, “One of the other unique features of our HomeShowExpo is the fact that it’s a single-site event, and we always choose a new development. So this is your chance to get a sneak peek at a location and see what’s coming.”

This year’s HomeShowExpo to be held in the RidgeView Development in Johnston offers a one-of-a-kind look at what’s possible when it comes to new construction. That alone is reason
to celebrate.
