Houzz search data reveals emerging trends that signal what’s ahead for home remodeling and decorating.
On the eve of the winter solstice, Houzz identified emerging design trends based on the latest search insights from our community of homeowners, home design enthusiasts, and remodeling and design professionals.* The trends reflect a growing interest in breaking down the barriers between their indoor havens and the beauty of their surroundings. Homeowners are also creating entertainment-focused gathering spaces, optimizing square footage with cleverly concealed rooms and turning an eye to green color schemes heading into the new year.
Greater Connections to the Outdoors
Homeowners are looking for ways to connect with the outdoors from the comfort of their interiors all year long. Searches for “bedroom window seats” and “living room bay windows” grew nearly 4.5x and 2.5x, respectively. A “four-season room” (up almost 2.5x) provides an enclosed sanctuary to take in landscapes from floor-to-ceiling windows.
Entertainment-Focused Gathering Spaces
Homeowners may snuggle up with family and friends during winter gatherings to enjoy films or live sports, with searches for “family room with tv over fireplace,” “living room with built-in entertainment” and “small home theater” increasing nearly 4.5x, 3.5x and 2x, respectively. Adding a “sectional with coffee table,” which spiked an astounding 47x, creates a sociable living space to gather before and after meals, or play games.
Secret or Hidden Spaces
We’re seeing a new focus on cloaked additions to home interiors that combine whimsy with functionality. Homeowners are gravitating toward the inclusion of “trap doors” and “kitchens with hidden pantries” (with searches up 3.5x and 2.5x), allowing seamless access to storage. Incorporating a covert “speakeasy home bar lounge” or “wine bar and cellar under the stairs” (with searches up 2x and over 1.5x, respectively) adds a fun element of surprise. This trend extends to children’s spaces too, with kids’ reading nooks up 2x.
Green Color Palettes
With a new year on the horizon, we’re seeing interest in incorporating the color of renewal in various shades throughout the home. Searches for “light green kitchen cabinets,” “sage green walls,” “teal living room,” “dark green exterior,” “green bathroom tile” and “pewter green” have all increased compared with the same period in 2022.
